Holz Elementary School is located in the suburbs of Charleston, West Virginia, the state capital. The school reflects the wide diversity of its community like a beautiful quilt. There is extensive community support and involvement at Holz. The child-centered curriculum reflects integration of a wide variety of technology applications and problem-based learning to enhance critical thinking skills and student engagement, as well as an emphasis on basic skill instruction on West Virginia Common Core Content Standards and Objectives and 21st Century Learning Strategies.

Holz achievement levels are traditionally above county levels on state achievement measures. There is a full time gifted education program housed within the building so students are not required to travel for services. Other special programs include a resource room, self contained special education, full day preschool, speech, library, reading and mathematics intervention, guidance counseling, physical education, art, music, and technology integration. The facility includes an updated computer lab, a refurbished library, new playground equipment for all ages, and after-school child care. Other enrichment programs include after school tutoring, chess club, Spanish club, and running club. A technology integration specialist supports learning and instruction as well as staff development for the 250 students and 13 teachers in preschool through fifth grade classrooms. In addition, instruction is provided by an art instructor one day per week, vocal music and chorus instruction three days per week, a strings program offered twice weekly, full-time speech therapist, librarian, and counselor, as well as a physical education program operating three days per week.

Fifth grade students participate in the Starbase science problem-based learning project and a school safety patrol program for leadership development. Fourth and fifth graders enjoy a two-day Outdoor Classroom experience annually at Camp Virgil Tate. Third through fifth grade students participate in a Student Council Program. Holz students compete in various art, literature, music, math, spelling, quiz bowl, and other academic competitions annually. Our nurse, counselor, and teachers coordinate community service, safety, and health and wellness projects.

The GW area social worker provides family assistance and support to Holz children and families. The active Parent Teacher Association provides enrichment events, staffing, equipment and materials for children and families in the form of classroom supplies, Family Math/Reading/Science Nights, COSI on Wheels, Accelerated Reader Program support, After School Tutoring program support, a Technology Integration specialist, lap top carts, new playground equipment, beautification and landscaping, and much more. Holz participates in several community service projects and Secret Santa and Family Food Basket programs. Numerous parent involvement initiatives help orient and guide parents to participate in their children's education, from birthday lunches, to read aloud, career awareness, and evening orientation and training sessions.

School staff and community members participate in active Wellness and Safety Committees, a Local School Improvement Council, Faculty Senate, Curriculum Team, Professional Learning Communities, collaborative teams for Monitoring Student Achievement, Leadership Teams for School Improvement, and a Student Assistance Team to support children, families, and learning.
